What is F1 in Schools?
F1 in Schools is an international STEM competition for school children (aged 9โ19), in which groups of 3โ6 students have to design and manufacture a miniature car out of the official F1 Model Block using CAD/CAM design tools. The cars are powered by CO2 cartridges and are attached to a track by a nylon wire. Teams are also told to create portfolios to show all of our work and explain the design process as well as evaluate and describe how we might further improve the car. Other aspects of the competition include a Verbal Presentation (a brief and more engaging way for the judges to learn about our research and design process) and a Pit Display where we actively show our car designs, merchandise, and branding efforts.
About Us
Apex Racing is an F1 in Schools Professional Class team in Hertfordshire, England from the Haberdashersโ Boysโ School. We have previously contributed and participated in both the Entry and Development Classes under the names Team Vortex and Team Cyclone with considerable success (in Entry Class: 2nd Place & Future Stars Award, in Development Class: 4th Place & Fastest Car).ย
This is our third year competing in the F1 in Schools competition and our first year competing in the Professional Class, the joint-first ever Haberdashersโ Boys Professional Class team to ever compete in the competition. Our aim this year is succeed in this yearโs National Competition by presenting a creative, impressive, consistent project which will stand out from others in the running, following success at a Regional Level: 2nd Place in our Class and Star Qualitiy Portfolio Winners. This website should be effective in leaving you with a much greater awareness of our team, our ethos and our journey through this competition.
Ishan is our Team Manager, responsible for overall team organisation, role interactions/structure and quality control regarding all project elements. The majority of his work, however, is in the making and cataloguing/making both portfolios and budget and risk management.
Amar is our Marketing Manager. His job includes the design and production of the Pit Display and ensuring a coherent brand identity across the project. Further, he works on the wheels with Yuhki and ensures the car is legal by comparing our car with the official rules and regulations.
Yuhki is our Manufacturing Engineer. He is responsible for sourcing cost-effective parts and researching the best materials for the car like the wheels, wings and bearings. His role also includes leading the manufacture and assembly stage of the car's development.
Rian is our Head of Design. He works primarily on CAD software to 3D model the car and ensure it is fast but also legal and manufacturable. Rian also designs the car's livery and finish and some of our team graphics.
Isaac is one of our Design Engineers. He works on CFD software and on track testing to measure and analyse the car's performance so we can make improve aerodynamic efficiency.
Our Design Ideals
We are called Apex Racing, and our name represents our commitment to expertise and manufacturing excellence, Apex meaning the highest point, and we fully intend our Professional Class journey to be our best year competitively against other F1 teams as well as a huge step up from our previous endeavours. Our design process has shifted from being quite extravagant and broad to a more simplistic and elegant aesthetic which appears more professional. The new team branding appears more focused and distinguishable than ever before and we look to continue with this new ideology as we progress further in the professional class.
Our Logo
Our Logo was created by our Graphic Designer - Rhys. It is more simple than our previous logos and sleek which reflects how we aim to progress as a team. The new colour scheme around purple is different and is not very common in the F1 in Schools competition. Purple is generally associated with wisdom and sophistication. We are extremely pleased with the more minimal but sophisticated look as the new team aesthetic.
Sustainability
One of our core values is sustainability. In previous classes we have always had an environmental sponsor (which we hope to have once again) and have every year undertaken 1 project to try and raise money, raise awareness or offset our own carbon footprint. We have some exciting projects planned out.ย
